District Reopening Plan

Dear North Collins Central School District Families,


As you know, stakeholders from the North Collins School Community have met over the last 4-6 weeks to review the latest COVID-19 guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and New York State Education Department (NYSED).  In the last two weeks, once the NYSED guidance was available, our district and buildings-based committees reviewed the document with students, staff and family. Safety has been, and will continue to be, our TOP priority. 


Based on the information we have available currently, the North Collins CSD intends to implement the HYBRID model of instruction IF we are permitted to reopen for the 2020-21 school year. 

HYBRID Model Highlights:

  • The HYBRID model allows for social distancing guidelines to be followed, every day, in every classroom. Students will be placed in two groups (Green and Gold).  Students from the same family/household will be assigned to the same group (group listings and sample schedules will be sent out from each building next week).

  1. Group Green will attend school for FULL-DAY IN-PERSON instruction on Monday and Thursday (Remote Learning on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday).

  2. Group Gold will attend school for FULL-DAY IN-PERSON instruction on Tuesday and Friday (Remote Learning on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday).

  3. Wednesday of each week will be a full REMOTE LEARNING day across the district (During weeks with one holiday, the remote instructional day will be removed from the schedule. If there are unplanned days off during a week, the schedule will be communicated to students and parents as soon as possible. Monthly calendars of the hybrid schedule will be sent out to parents and students in advance).

  4. A possible hybrid calendar for the month of September can be found online.

  • All students will be issued a Chromebook the first week of school.

  • Students will be required to wear masks or cloth face coverings when social distancing of at least 6 feet may not be possible in the buildings (e.g., in hallways, restrooms).

  • Students must wear a mask or face covering to ride the school bus and wear it while entering and exiting our school buildings.

  • All students, faculty, staff and visitors will undergo a temperature screening prior to entering the buildings.  All employees will complete a symptom screening each day via a questionnaire. Students will be required to complete a symptom screening each day with parents. More information is included in the reopening plan regarding this protocol.

  • Breakfasts/Lunches- Each building will develop a plan for social distancing while students eat breakfast/lunch.  Also, if needed, students will be able to take home meals for their remote instruction days.

  • Transportation will be made available to students whose parents/guardians are unable to drive them to/from school.  Further information will be forthcoming.

We will continue with the 2 in-person/3 remote days learning plan and will reevaluate given the rate of infection within our region of NY and within our own community, following the executive orders of the Governor and all NYSED/NYDOH/CDC guidance.  We are hopeful that our students will be able to return to school for 5 days per week for as much of the school year as possible and we will continue to assess this option as the school year progresses.   Our goal has been and will continue to be to create a plan that is safe for students and staff while also recognizing the social/emotional and academic needs of our students.  Families will be kept informed along the way.

In addition, certain students may be at increased risk for complications from COVID-19 or may have family members in high-risk groups.  Such students may need accommodations such as added/alternative provisions for social distancing, additional PPE, modifications to mask requirements and/or remote learning.  The District encourages all families to review the following GUIDANCE and to consider any needs your child may have. 


As stated, this is our current plan that will continue to be updated and adjusted in the coming weeks and months.  We also understand that many families still have questions that we might not have the answer for right now, but we will work with each family to come up with a solution.  Please contact your student’s building principal or myself with questions that arise from the reopening plan.  


 The support and partnership with families and the community has been critical in the creation of the plans and for the safe return of our students and staff.  We will be sending more information to you via email and our District’s Reopening Plan can be found at our District’s website.
